Mary Jo's Pizzeria
About This Spot
Mary Jo's Pizzeria unfolds its quiet charm in the heart of Turtle Creek, nestling comfortably on Leneake Street like a well-kept local secret. This isn’t your typical restaurant front; it’s a welcoming, no-frills slice of home where the pace slows just enough to appreciate the ritual of picking up a pizza crafted with consistency and care. The modest exterior hints at something familiar and sincere inside, a space where neighbors come not just for food but for a moment of simple warmth.
Step through the door, and you enter a calm, lived-in rhythm that feels like catching up with an old friend. The hum of conversations and the gentle shuffle of footsteps echo softly around a kitchen that’s been humming away—quietly and steadily—since the 1960s. Here, making pizza is less about flash and more about tradition, a kind of time-honored craft that is lovingly preserved in every pie.
The atmosphere is unpretentious, embodied in the easy-going interactions behind the counter where the couple running the place greet each caller and visitor with genuine kindness. While Mary Jo's may not boast an elaborate menu, every pizza speaks volumes with its unique personality—the sweet, almost nostalgic tomato sauce, the chewy, thin Sicilian-style crust, and the way the cheese stretches and settles, offering a subtle, secret layer of warmth with each bite. Ordering here means embracing something larger than just a meal—it’s about connecting with decades of quiet family tradition and the comforting consistency of a beloved neighborhood taste.
Most patrons know that no matter the toppings—green peppers, onions, pepperoni, or mushrooms—the pizza arrives as an ample, hearty pie at a price that invites regular visits. Meals here become a small celebration of simplicity done well, best enjoyed fresh and hot, offering a gentle, grounding experience to anyone who picks up the phone or rings the doorbell (which might be a bit quirky but all part of the charm).
Mary Jo’s is one of those rare places that doesn’t need to shout. Its joy is found in the familiar—the cozy, quiet confidence that a perfect slice of pizza can offer comfort and bring people together, one chewy, sweet-savory bite at a time.

You must call in your order for pick-up. The man and woman running the place are very nice. Pizza, no matter the toppings, is $8. It's a lot larger than one would think. It was better fresh and hot than later once the cheese cooled. I've never had a sauce like this, it's very sweet. I can't wait to get another pizza from here.

I’ve been eating this pizza since I was young kid. It has undergone virtually no changes over several decades. It will be forever my favorite food until the day I die (unless the recipe changes). It’s a sweet sauce, the dough composition is very unique, and the cheese has a secret taste and density to it. The single size (medium-ish) pizza is all they sell but toppings do not cost extra. I used to only eat plain because it’s almost too good to put toppings on. It’s inexpensive ($8), pick up only, it’s hidden in a residential basement, and hours of operation are limited. I eat a lot of pizza, many different pizzas, and none enhance my mood more than Mary Jo’s.

Update 12/3/24: Pizzas are now $8. Still, ridiculously cheap for a whole pie. $7 for a 13 inch tasty pie? Fresh tomatoes in the sauce? Any and all toppings, same price? Ok! Green Pepper 'n Onion . Please and thank you. Sauce is sweet. Pizza is great. Crust is thin, chewy. Sicilian style slices. Price can't be beat. 30 mins from order to pickup. This is my new fav! P.S. Knock. Doorbell's out. Updated 1/19/24 Total Visits: 4 Reccos: Plain, Green Pepper and Onion.

The pizza is great! The lady is super nice! The cost is cheaper than a frozen pizza! Cannot recommend more!

Great little hidden gem! They've been making pizza out of their basement kitchen since the 60's! Yes, it's a pizza shop in a house! A 13" pizza is what they sell, and 6 toppings to choose from for $8, no matter what you get on it. The crust is a little dense and chewy, but delicious. The sauce a little sweet, and it goes great with the pepperoni. I get double pep. Sweet and a little spicy. Great quality cheese an sauce. Addictive pizza imo. A must try for pizza lovers. Great people and great pizza.

The sauce is so sweet. I know a lot of folks in Pennsylvania love sweet tomato sauces to cut the acidity, but I am not a fan. The toppings are pretty good. The crust is not crisp and crunchy, it's more like a pan pizza. Kind people, good service!

Excellent pizza for the price ($6 for a good sized pizza with as many toppings as you want!), but not my favorite. Sauce and crust are fairly sweet, so there is not enough of a flavor contrast for my liking. Toppings and cheese are good, but I wish the toppings were more flavorful, and perhaps the cheese could be a bit higher quality. HOWEVER, the people are very friendly and for the price ($6 pizza!), it is, again, excellent. Also, I would say it is a really good pizza for kids. Ours (5yo and 1yo) loved it.
